Week 2 Questions:

Do you only read authors of color? Why is this?

If you have never read a book by an author of color (or have read very few), why is this?

Over the past three months or so, I’ve changed the way that I choose my books. Before, I chose based on the blurb on the back of the book. I would read the back and if it caught me and gave me “the burn” to read it, I would choose it. If not, it would go back on the shelf, regardless of author or publishing house. Since I joined ACFW, I’ve started trying to read the works of my new ACFW pals. When I choose a book, I don’t try to discern whether the author is an author of color. Just whether the story is going to grab me or not.

I like reading AA authors books because I can relate to the story. Some of them sound so familiar, they stimulate frequent chuckles and that’s what keeps me reading. For me, it’s more of a relational thing.

I hope you do not mind my weighing in. I am Caucasian, and have read a variety of authors. and have had some odd looks from folks when I whipped out a Toni Morrison to read in a waiting room. oh, to be able to write like her!! Really good writing helps people to get out of the comfort zone and begin to understand another perspective. Perhaps that is why so many people stick with reading a certain type of book, a certain style of author, or reading only black or only white or only Latina…etc…We do not like to leave that comfort zone!

    Blessings,

This is a very interesting question. First of all, I’ve read VERY FEW books by authors of color. Why? Most of them are fiction and I’m not really a fiction reader. Another thing, I’m not sure where the non-fiction african-american authors are. I haven’t seen any specific sites.

I tend to read self-help books so if you know of any by fellow african-american authors, please let me know. Thanks!

As a youngster I read books by authors of color, mainly out of support. Today I read for substance, race has nothing to do with it. I too would be interested in non-fiction AA authors. Pass it along when you come across some authors. Thanks.

I’ve read all kinds of books since I was old enough to read, too. I’ve noticed that sometimes there is an issue there. I review a lot of books by black authors but I don’t know many people who do who aren’t also black. I love ethnic fiction of any kind. I love different cultures and perspectives. It’s who I am. Now I would love it if more black readers would read my book even though the people on the cover aren’t black. I have wonderful endorsements by Sherri Lewis and Victoria Christopher Murray. I hope that helps a little. :) I just want people to read the stories of my heart. That’s what authors do. And I am one of the few people/reviewrs I know who will review books published by other means than traditional publishing. Sad, but true.
